DIY- Bedroom project!

Hey Guys!

Here is my first DIY post on my blog. I have been inspired a lot lately to keep posting my work that I'm doing, and instead of photos, its actually construction projects. So here are some pictures from my room re-do.

Since I have moved back into my parents house for a while, I figured I should update my old bedroom from the Hot pink- Hot mess it used to be, to a normal functioning space. (I went through a phase when I was 12 where i liked this red-pink color and for some reason my parents let me paint my room that color... bad idea)

Here is a sad sad video of my room, before I started tearing it apart. It was pink, very unorganized, and packed with dark heavy colors.

If you didn't notice from the video, I have pastel pink carpet. Yes, yes I do... I was in the second grade when we built the house and my parents let us pick all the designs for our rooms. I had pink bow wallpaper and pink walls, and pink carpet. I didn't even like pink that much so I have no idea what I was thinking.

But while designing my room I had to work with the pink carpet until my parents put in hardwood floors. So I wanted to do a neutral-ish wall so the pink wouldn't be too over powering.

I decided on a pale gray/blue color.

After I cleared out my entire room I prepped my walls for primer to smother the hideous hot pink. I was so excited.

After primer let the painting begin!

Two coats later. BAZAM!

I bought this comforter like 5 years ago, and at the time was the most expensive thing I had ever bought. But I LOVED IT. It had all vintage fabrics on it, and its softer than Angel skin and amazing. So I thought I would use it as my "inspiration" when I'm putting everything together.

I saw this awesome obnoxious black and white floral fabric, and I thought It would be fantastic matching my quilt, and my black and white Star Trek chair. (see video for Captain Kirk chair) So i made the fabric into curtains for my windows!

I had re-organized my desk baskets and down sized all them to these tan square boxes. I wanted to do away with my heavy black shelves, so I matched the wood stain of my dresser and armoire and stained simple wood planks above my new desk.

This desk used to be an awful cabinet hutch thing that I had gotten for free, it was bright 1960's orange and had 2 cabinet doors at the bottom with shelves. I decided it could be a new sewing desk, so I ripped out the cabinet and the shelves and sanded it down, re-painted and created this cute little desk.

I switched out the knobs and lined the drawers with old wallpaper. (extra from my thesis show lolz)

With a couple of accessories from my beloved Ikea, my little desk works perfect.

I had so many photos, and framed art pieces with no home, I decided to keep my walls clean and neat by painting all my frames black with white mattes. I don't have a head board (YET!) so the wall above my bed was a perfect place to display everything.

I think with my vintage-y color scheme and my black and white accents my room is definitely more livable and grown up. I think my parents will appriciate the lack of hot-pink when I move back out. :)

It was a lot of fun re-doing and I am so glad I did it.

  1. What brand of paint is that? Did you choose the frost gray? What finish? INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW.

Also, where did you get your angelskin comforter? I like it.

  2. OOOOOO gurl. This room looks great! I'm digging the wall color a lot. I like that you have pink carpet, as I have pink carpet in my room at my parent's house. Why did they let us pick that out?!!!!! I guess anything goes in the '90s.

  3. Lydia, I did indeed pick Frost Grey. I got a satin white primer that I believe was Valspar. 1 Gallon of that and 2 gallons of the Satin Frost Grey. Only God himself would have covered that pink in 1 coat of paint... so it took me give or take 1.5 gallons and the primer. fml. I used the green Frog tape for the first time on my trim, instead of the blue painters tape... and it KICKED MAJOR REAR. It was awesome. I will never use blue tape again.

  4. Anna, My parents are planning on re-doing the whole house in hardwood as soon as they aren't helping with college loans anymore. So until then my sister has teal green carpet and I have this hideous pink. its in good condition but so ugly. They are all about self expression so I guess my mom thought she was being "cool" by letting us choose everything when we built the house. Too bad she didn't think that 15 years later I would still be in that room hating it. I appreciate the thought, though.
